My Top Three People

My Top Three People

Did you know? Every person around you will more or less influence your life, even if she or he just passes by. Looking back your life, and who are the top three influences on you. Have you even thought about that? I have thought about that for a long time because I have my top three. They influence my knowledge, my personality, and my emotions. Even though some good experiences or bad. I think you will know that who influences you isn’t all positive; it also has some negative experiences.
My grandmother is the most influential person for me. I was used to living with her since I was 6-year-old. She is an intelligent and kind woman and she taught me many things. She showed me what I could do and what I couldn’t do. She treats everybody kindly even those who just a pass by. Once, on a cold New Year’s Eve there was a homeless person. He came to my home and knocked the door. He told my grandmother he was so hungry and he needed some soup and food. My grandmother didn’t say anything. She simply went to the kitchen brought what he wanted. She also gave him some bread. You know what, at that time we didn’t have a lot of food for our new year. I asked her “Why did you give him extra bread? That was our food for the next couple days.” She said, “You know what. It is easy to add the misfortunes to a man who is already unfortunate. On the other hand, it is so difficult to help a man who is in distress. Yes we won’t have bread for couple days, but if you help a man in a difficult position, you will get a hand when you need someone. I want you to know that.” She always gives me the optimistic and active outlook on life still now. I saw her helped people, so if someone needs my help, I will if I can do it.
You can say my grandmother influences my knowledge or the outlook on life but my aunt, who is my mother’s sister, influences my personality, rather than she controls my personality. You might be curious why I said that. It is because she gave me a lot of rules when was a teenager. She said, “I have the responsibility for you.” My parents worked in another city so they entrusted me to my aunt. My parents said, “We left you because we wanted you to have a good education.” Ok, I accepted that. My aunt made some rules for me. I couldn’t drink. I couldn’t smoke. I couldn’t stay out past 11:00. I couldn’t say bad words. If I didn’t do what she said, she would scold me and grill me. I was so scared of her voice so I was nice. Sometimes I thought if she didn’t control my personality, I would become a rebellious teenager. I know some people might disagree with that. You might think that was too compulsory, but that is the traditional Chinese family education. I became what she wanted me to become, a honest person.
While my aunt wanted to make my life positive, my cousin gave me negative idea about my life. They are my father’s brother’s son and daughter. I don’t know why they don’t like me. They always used their sharp words to hurt me. Last time I saw them in a family party in 2007. They insult me, “You don’t belong to this family you can’t have our family name, and you are cross-eyed.” I wanted to fight back, but when I faced them I was tongue-tied. I didn’t know what I could say. I just suppressed my tear, so I didn’t eat anything in the party. I asked myself why they always treat me like that. I didn’t have any ideas so I was just like an ostrich, I didn’t want to face them. As a result, if I have a family party, I will inquire about that they will go or not. If they go, I won’t. I couldn’t stand with them in a place. Why I put them in my top three because they are the first people I knew they dislike me and even if they are my relations.
Everyone next to me more or less influences me but there are the top three. Why I didn’t put my parents in the top three? I was separated from them for over 10 years. In my life, I couldn’t get everything positive because it is impossible. Someone influences me because he or she wants to give me a positive life. However someone influences me, because he or she gives me some bad experiences and it will change my mind. My grandmother and aunt gave me positive life, on the other hand, I don’t want to talk my cousins anymore because they give me negative feeling still now.

Who you want to be

Who you want to be
If you had a chance to see your nine year old self, what kind of conversation would you have? Last night, I had a dream. The nine-year-old-me admonished me because I am not who she wanted to be when she grew up. I felt depressed about myself and she told me what she hated.
She said, “I hate your cowardice.” When you first time faced your cousins what you did. When they stuck a gum in your hair, you didn’t fight back. When you grandmother asked you about it, you didn’t say who did it. So the consequence was your grandmother cut your hair. You were like a boy then your cousins made fun of your hair. When they bullied you, what did you do? You didn’t fight back and you were tongue-tied so they bullied you again and again. I hate your cowardice. When you were me, I didn’t like that. I would fight back. You had chance to, but you didn’t. I was so depressed because you always indulged them; they thought you were scared. You always got around because they are your cousins.
She said, “Yes, I hate your cowardice and I also hate your hesitation.” You were indecisive. When you grow up, you make your decisions. From elementary, middle school to high school, which school did you wanted to go? If someone had requested something of you, you never directly say no and you obeyed him or her. Even though your mind doesn’t like it, your mouth couldn’t say no. For example, your parents made decision you come to New York. When they asked you, you didn’t directly say no. Because your hesitation, you came to New York. You didn’t know what kind life you wanted. You didn’t know that coming America was good or bad.
Beside those that two things, I also hate that you have never achieved anything. Look around at your friends (your classmates from elementary school to high school) who are like you. They all have good jobs and they all achieved their goal; moreover, they all make a lot of money, and they bought cars and houses. Look at what you are doing now. Your friends are doctors, bosses, civil servants and how about you? You are in school and you couldn’t buy a house or a car. You couldn’t even buy a motorcycle. You are perplexed to your new situation and life. You didn’t have specific goals. You dither in your life, so you don’t have any achievements. I fell so depressed about you and I don’t want to turn into you.
I told her if time could go back when I was nine years, everything would change. If I were a nine years, I would be wild with joy. However time couldn’t go back, I would change so now who I am. When the nine years I was disappointed in the 25 year old me, I felt so sorry. I am not the person she wants to be, but she doesn’t have a chance to change me.

Music

Music
Imagine that you didn’t know what music was, would your life change or not? I couldn’t live in a world without music because it influences me immensely. When the world has human, it also has music. Music influences human emotions. Ages ago, music was even used as a weapon or medicine. Chinese used a drum when two counties fought; they wanted to boost soldiers’ morale. Chinese also used vertical bamboo flutes to relax. When someone couldn’t sleep, the music from the flute would make people to fall sleep. Music is my friend; it accompanies me and influences me.
I will never forget my youth because music gave me a cheerful childhood. I remember dearly, a lullaby called Grandmother’s Bay. My grandmother used to sing it when I was a little girl. She sang to soothe me to sleep. My grandmother sang it very softly and in a moving way. The song was the first song I could sing. My grandmother always sang the song, and I asked to her “why do you always like to sing this song?” She said, “The song is singing what I want to say and what I want to do for you.” When I asked her that, I was too young, and I couldn’t understand what she meant. Now, I know that my grandmother wanted me to have a great childhood. I have entered my adulthood and there are the times when something hurts me, but I can remember the happiness from my childhood, my grandmother and her song. If I hadn’t had my grandmother and her song in my childhood, my childhood would have been incomplete. The lyrics are “Grandmother holds my hand and we walk at the beach. One footprint is one smile, curtain of night swallows our shadows and we walk to go back home.” Every time when I hear the song, I will have a smile.
Music gave me a good childhood and it also influenced me as a teenager. When I was a teenager, my family circumstances were at an all time low. I didn’t have any new toys or clothes so my cousin always bullied me and made fun of my clothes. I was so depressed; I didn’t know why I couldn’t have everything that he had. One day I heard a song and the lyrics were the best I have ever heard. I remember when my mood was bad or my cousin did something bad to me, I would sing the song and the lyrics would make me relaxed. The lyrics said, “Life is like a movie and don’t care too much about resentment. Wealth; you couldn’t bring back, when you are born. Also you couldn’t take away, when you die.” That tells me that, I need to be brave to face anything and I can’t get everything that I want. At that time, I thought if I had had better family circumstances, my cousins would not have looked down me. It was my vanity. Sometime my vanity can create evil in my heart, but music will fight and against them.
Music heals my vanity (sometimes) and it also accompanies me when I feel lonely. When I was in elementary school, my parents separated with me because they needed to go to another city work and I needed to stay my hometown to continue studying. I could see them twice a year. At that time, I was shy and I didn’t have any confidence. I didn’t have any friends and when I saw my classmates and their parents come to school and pick them up, I just needed to walk to go home by myself. I felt very lonely. I always stayed in my bedroom and listened to music. I knew that music would make me feel that I was not alone. Music accompanied me to pass that time I was in solitude. Imagine that a girl in a room, she sat on the bed and she was stupefied. How did you feel? After many years she would be like a doll because she didn’t have any communicates. She wouldn’t talk to anyone. On the other hand, if she had music with her, she would communicate a part of the world. There were totally different two situations.
I know that some people say that, music doesn’t help you make advancements. Yes, I might not have accomplished as much as most people, but music gave me a great childhood and accompanied me passed the hard time. It is my great friend. If I didn’t listen to music in my life, I don’t know who I would have become.

Censorship

Censorship
Do you think censorship is necessary for the arts? I think some people might not know what it is and what it is doing. Censorship is some system of blocking information from being publish, such as, books, plays or films. I don’t like censoring the arts. If arts are censored, it will not be art. In my opinion censorship is necessary for some situations, but I don’t side with it when the department censor in the arts. I found three cases, and I want to tell you what it is working.
There is a movie, named ‘ Lust Caution’ by director Ang Lee in 2007. The State Broadcasting Film and Television Administration, which is the department of China which has the power to censor movies, videos and serials, censored the movie, cut off over 13 minutes of sexy screen action. They said: “The movie had too many sexual scenes and China’s censorship rules don’t allow that.” Also they cut off some violent scenes. After they censored the movie, the movie could play at cinemas, but it couldn’t play on television. A lot of people went to see the movie, but a critic said that, “After I saw it, I feel it didn’t connect very well and I feel it was like a book with some main pages torn off or a pizza without cheeses.” If a movie has been broken, it will not be art. Some people complained; they wanted to see the whole movie and not a part of the movie, but the movie still can’t play in its entirety. In my opinion, the censorship department doesn’t need to cut out sexual scenes from a movie and play it in a cinema because the movie just allow over 18-year-old to watch it. Then after they cut out the sexual parts of movie and allow it to play on television. Don’t cut out any part of movie because it is like art director’s baby; don’t cut art baby’s fingers or toes. A whole movie is art.
Even so the department censored the film, they also censored a naked statue of Greek God and it happened in California 2000. The statue was near an elementary school. Some parents gave the information to City Officials, and told them that the statue bothered their kids because it was naked. After that, the City Officials dressed the statue in a gold T-shirt. It is good for kids, but not all residents like the statue dressed up so people took the clothes off again and again. One resident Eric Ford said, “If the statue dressed, it would not be like an art.” So the City Officials decided that, only in some important meeting, they will dress the statue. I disagree what they did to the statue, this is just an art form Greek style. I think just move it away from school, don’t dress the statue because it breaks up arts.
If you think dress a statue is funny, what do you think a high school banned a book? Which name is “Bless Me Ultima”, and it took place in America 2008. It talked about American Indian religious traditions and Roman Catholicism. Critics say its anti-Catholic, so one parents complained. As a result Superintendent Rick Fauss Banned the book at Orestimba High School. He said, “It is a religious book so it doesn’t appropriate for everybody. However a scholar says, “It is just a book, why is it banned in the school?” It still can’t be read in the school. I think those students don’t care about religion, whereas their parents do care about it. It is a book and if students read, they just learn something good from the book whether it is violent books, religious books or sexual books. I couldn’t believe if you read a book about anti-catholic, you will become anti catholic. As well you don’t have to like what you don’t want to, but you can’t force other people to agree with you, ever if they are your kids.
I don’t know what you think about these three cases, but for me I don’t like what the department decided to do. These three cases make me to feel vulnerable because when the department decided what they did, they broke up artist’s dream. If arts always censor like that, who will be have energy to do and it is like they strangle artists’ abilities.
